[CTFF General] fly fishing class

Hello,

My name is Wes Johnson, and some of you may remember me because I occasionally came to some of your meetings the last several years while going to school at Texas State.

I am working as a summer intern with TPWD at South Llano River State Park, and am trying to organize a fly fishing class at the park to introduce beginners to the sport. The class would take place o either August 9th or August 16th, but at this point I have been unable to find a set of fly rods to use for the class. Without the fly rods I am afraid I will have to change the class to convientional tackle, which I don't think would be as interesting and educational for most participants. I am wondering if CTFF would consider letting me borrow a set of fly rods (if the club has some), or if any of you might know where else I might be able to find a set. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also just for your informantion, the fishing out here has been really good, so some of you might want to consider taking the trip to fish the South Llano.

If you would prefer to communicate with me by phone about the fly rods my cell number is 512-757-3018.

Thanks, Wes Johnson

[CTFF General] EXPO Fly Tying Ideas

For those of you planning on helping out at fly tying at EXP0 or even if you are not, start thinking of some patterns we can tie. Generally you want something that someone with little to no experience can tie in 10-15 minutes. We have a lot of new feathers in the club box and it would be good to make use of them. I will try to bring the club box to one of the general mtgs and one of the tying nights between now and EXPO.

If you are hesitant to help at tying because you don't have experience, don't be. We can train you quickly before hand or even at EXPO. We also need "extra hands" folks to assist tyers in addition to the instructors.

Thanks,
Brian

I arose not as early as I should have this past Saturday, and decided to go try my luck at Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake for those of you too stubborn to accept change), in the waters surrounding Red Bud Isle. While en route to the lake, I received a phone call from a hapless friend who was stuck going into the office for no apparently good reason. So I had to give him the requisite razzing about putting work before more important things.

When I arrived at the parking area at Red Bud Isle, I found it inundated with dogs and more dogs. I was able to find a good parking spot, spent a few minutes assembling and inflating the kickboat and finally hit the water, noticing that there has been a lot of shoreline erosion making entry not as easy as it had been. I started fishing down river of the island on the south bank getting the occasional tap of a small sunfish trying to eat the over-sized Matt's Bug. I landed a few hand-sized sunfish and decided to change to a pattern we call the "river minnow." I switched banks to hit the north shore and work my way up to the spillway. I had a few bumps and landed a few smallish sunfish and had a couple of yearling-class bass chase the fly as it was stripped.

While fishing I noticed that there has been a great increase in the population of turtles in the lake. I made my way just to the lefthand side of the spillway and was casting against the island at the foot of the dam, when my rod nearly doubled over, definitely a strong fish that fought deeply, giving me the telltale indication that I had become engaged with a decent smallmouth bass. The all too brief battle lasted for a minute before the bronzeback was able to throw the hook.

I cast in the same area a few more times before changing flies to a Bluegill Bully and going after sunfish. I caught numerous sunfish on this pattern, nothing of great size, but had a blast. I had nearly made it all the way around the island for the second time when the daily water release started... I made my way to the nearly impossible to use boat ramp on the north side of the island, waded my way through the dogs, and back to the parking lot. It was a good way to spend a Saturday morning.

Park the vehicles on the right side of the road as you enter the campground (in other words, not in one of the campsites). The launch is between campsites 8 & 9. Just stop by his office (it is to your right before you go through the gate) to register. At the other end of the float, Shady Grove Campground, we can park on the hill next to the office. I think they charge $2 per car plus $1 for each person.

Fishing was kinda slow at 2nd crossing (River Road Camp) this week. Nothing on Monday. 2 sunnies Tuesday morning then one nice 20" bow around 5PM towards the end of the pool. Billy showed up on Wed and proceeded to pull fish out of the riffle I fished the day before with no luck. One of the fish was a very nice 2lb channel cat. I tied up one of Billy's ghetto flies and we headed down to the lower riffle. We each immediately pulled out a bass, but then it was over.

I plan to do the longer float because if I'm going to burn the high-dollar gas I want to make it worth my while. I've already contacted both locations and there are nominal fees at each (I don't know about Sculls Crossing yet).
The Rio Grand Cichlid was 10.75 inches and 1.08 pounds for a new water body (SMR) record. The bass was between 19-20 inches. The longear sunfish were agressive and fought well for their size. Yes, Shortrod, it is beginners luck, but I love it. Congrats on the nice redbreast sunfish at Rio Vista today.

More pictures of the bass and sunfish are attached.

LIke Jack, I too am a wee bit jealous but considering you are rather "new" to the sport, I'll just lay it off to beginners luck. Seriously, this is fly fishing our native waters at its best, congratulation and keep it coming.
